Kinetic Molecular Theory

To explain the behavior of gasses, the kinetic molecular theory can be used. The work kinetic refers to the motion of the molecules as they constantly move in all directions. This theory presents each gas molecule as a tiny particle. A gas molecule may collide with any object in its path, such as another gas molecule on the walls of its container, like billiard balls in a pool table.

Kinetic Molecular Postulate

Do you know?

the principle assumptions of the kinetic molecular theory are the following:

  • gasses consist of very tiny molecules. The distance between these molecules is significantly longer than the size of the molecules themselves.
  • there is no force of attraction between and among gas molecules, gas molecules
  • Gas molecules are in a constant, random, and linear motion. They collide frequently with one another and with the walls of their container. These collisions are perfectly elastic. That is, no energy is lost nor gained when gas molecules collide.
  • the average kinetic energy of gas molecules is the same for all gasses at the same temperature, and its value is directly proportional to the kelvin temperature.
